AT&T Classic
http://www.attclassic.com/
The tournament now known as the AT&T Classic dates back to 1964 and the purchase of hundreds of acres of farmland near the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County by Atlanta businessman Jim Clay and six of his friends.
The Atlanta Country Club (ACC) was built on the land, which soon became the annual site of the Atlanta Golf Classic tournament. The Atlanta Classic Foundation, established by Clay and 50 of his friends, has managed and promoted the tournament since its debut in 1966. That year, Clay held a two-day Pro-Am at ACC to convince PGA Tour officials that the Foundation could indeed manage such a tournament.
The Classic officially joined the PGA Tour in 1967. From 1967 through 1996, the tournament was played at Atlanta Country Club before moving to TPC Sugarloaf in 1997.
Bob Charles took home the first championship in 1967. Two-time champions include Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Bob Lunn, Larry Nelson, Wayne Levi, Tom Kite and Scott McCarron.
